The Sure Thing
One of the things that keeps us stuck when we are less than satisfied in life is our desire for the sure thing. We want to do something that we know will succeed in yielding the results we want; otherwise, why bother?
Before making changes or taking action, we want to know that we’re taking the shortest, fastest, most direct path.
We also hate the idea of wasting time, money, and energy on something that may not work. (Even though, if we’re honest, we would admit to wasting all of those on a pretty regular basis.)
What we fear most is the idea of looking like a moron to those real or imagined naysayers just waiting for the opportunity to say, “Well, I knew that was a bad idea.” Or “Why can’t you just be satisfied where you are?”
We want the perfect plan that won’t fail, won’t require us to break a sweat, and won’t make us look bad.
At the risk of sounding like a lousy life coach and an even worse financial planner, I must admit that this plan doesn’t exist.
Life is both art and science and requires creativity, experimentation, the willingness to make it up as you go and to pivot, and the expectation that some of what you try won’t work.
What gives you confidence and motivation to take action and keep moving in spite of such uncertain conditions is a strong connection to your values, your passion, your purpose (a/k/a your “why”), along with faith in your ability to recover from failure, disappointment, and embarrassment.
If you have yet to connect deeply with what you want and why or to develop faith in yourself to begin the journey toward it, this is as good a time as any.
Just as there is no sure thing, there is no time more perfect to begin than the moment you decide you are tired of hanging out and hoping the stars will align for you.
They won’t.
Fortunately, you have the ability to align yourself.
What are you waiting for?
